Getting Started in Therapy
If you are interested in psychotherapy,
please email or call Dr. Ware’s office
to schedule an initial consultation at
no charge. Dr. Ware offers this
opportunity because she feels it is
important to meet in person to determine
whether you will be comfortable working
with Dr. Ware. This initial
consultation also allows Dr. Ware to
begin to assess your difficulties and
discuss treatment options with you.
If you are unsure whether to schedule this initial appointment, Dr.
Ware is available for a brief telephone
conversation. While you are welcome to
email a brief narrative describing your
situation, please keep in mind that it
is impossible to fully understand a
situation via email (emergency
situations should not be addressed via
email or voice mail).
During the initial consultation, you
will be provided with information about Dr.
Ware's practice and a personal history
questionnaire (to be completed before
your first therapy session). This questionnaire will provide Dr. Ware
with a concise understanding of your
background and an overview of the issues
you wish to address in therapy; this
information will allow Dr. Ware to
assist you more quickly in obtaining
benefit from therapy.
It is
important that you feel comfortable with
any therapist or psychologist that you
choose since you must be able to open up
with that individual about your thoughts
and feelings.
For that
reason, if you feel that Dr. Ware is not
the right psychologist for you after the
initial consultation, she can make
recommendations for other psychologists
based on the information you provided
during the initial consultation. Equally
important in selecting a therapist is
assessing the professional's training and
experience. Licensed psychologists,
such as Dr. Ware, have completed
doctoral degrees at accredited
institutions, completed accredited
internship programs (approximately
2,000 hours), completed at least
one-year of full-time post doctoral
supervised experience (an additional 2,000 hours), and passed both written
and oral state and national
examinations administered by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. Such rigorous
credentialing processes for
psychologists are important, as are
continuing educational experiences and
training after licensure. Be certain to
investigate the credentials, experience,
and participation in the professional
community of any
psychologist or therapist that you are considering. You should
also investigate whether the psychologist or therapist you are
considering has ever been reprimanded by the licensing board.
Licensed mental health professionals are required to follow rules and
procedures to make certain clients are treated ethically. Mental
health professionals may be sanctioned if a client files a complaint or
the licensing board otherwise becomes aware of a lapse in adherence to
professional standards.
